With the Unesco-designated site of Stone Town as its location, the latest addition to the ever-expanding Park Hyatt collection has landed against a historic backdrop that has generally remained unchanged for the past 200 years. Mindful of this, the beachfront hotel is rooted in two buildings, one of them Mambo Msiige: a Unesco-appointed Zanzibari mansion that dates to the 17th century, where detailed carvings and a serene open courtyard give an immediate sense of heritage. It sits adjacently to the newly built Zamani Village, whose sympathetic architecture makes direct references to the Swahili culture, whilst also noting the Arab, Persian, Indian and European influences on the island. Modernity is ushered in via an obligatory oceanfront infinity pool, a library bar and the Amantara spa, with its four treatment rooms. There are 67 rooms in total, including 11 suites; we suggest plumping for an Oceanfront Room, with views of Dhow Harbour and the Indian Ocean.
