Stylist Nadiia Shapoval and Kiev-based artist Masha Reva have collaborated on a range of bold ceramics infused with confidence and fun-loving flare. The range is the first collection for Shapoval’s eponymous brand Nadiia, through which she aims to explore the spiritual, artistic and tactile potential of everyday objects.

Reva is known for her line drawings and bold brushstrokes. Her medium is undefined which has allowed her to build a steady portfolio of creative collaborations, having painted on everything from clothing to suitcases or even directly onto model’s bodies, as during a photo shoot for Jacquemus. For the Nadiia collaboration, Reva applies her art to a collection of ceramics made using traditional Ukrainian craft techniques. Reva’s signature thick black lines and swaths of bold colour enhance the warmth and beauty of Ukrainian pottery, a traditionally integral part of the culture’s ties to family and community for generations.

The designs are at once sophisticated and cheeky, such as a donut-shaped vase donned with an abstract interpretation of someone caught in the nude. Oversized hands and fingers reappear on various vessels throughout the collection. Each piece is unique, though clearly part of the same family thanks to a consistent colour palette of muted shades on natural ceramics.

Having established Nadiia in 2018, Shapoval foresees the brand continuing to combine traditional craft techniques and materials with unique histories, with the cutting edge talent of contemporary creatives. Highly influenced by her grandparents, both of whom were progressive figureheads in Kiev’s 1960s intelligentsia community, Shapoval’s interest lies in honouring her Ukrainian roots in a time where globalization is inevitably eroding national identities. Her long-term aim is to grow Nadiia into a large-scale multifaceted project driven by a socio-cultural mission of adapting the artisanal identities of traditional cultures to the modern world.
